Psychosis is described as a loss of contact with reality. An episode of psychosis is often frightening, distressing and confusing. Approximately three out of every one hundred people will experience an episode of psychosis during their lifetime. Several different mental illnesses can have psychosis as a symptom. Psychosis often appears in early adulthood but tends to affect women later than men. Psychosis causes symptoms that can interfere with many aspects of a person’s life especially their work and social life. Some symptoms make it difficult to know what is real and what is not real. Other symptoms cause problems with motivation, concentration and experiencing enjoyment.

There is effective treatment for psychosis. People with psychosis can lead effective and productive lives.
