The Programme

The Programme
The Dual Diagnosis Programme has an inpatient, day care and after care aspect and it focuses on education, guidance, support and treatment of people suffering from both an addictive and mood disorder. The programme aims to increase understanding and insight in both areas to promote resolution of symptoms and to provide an integrated and comprehensive plan for maintaining the benefits after discharge from hospital.

Stage 1 of the programme involves an inpatient stay in St Patrick's Hospital. During this stage a detoxification is undergone to aid withdrawal from any addictive substances and the patient is assessed by members of the multi-disciplinary team to aid an individual treatment plan. During this time pharmacotherapy treatment may be commenced.

Stage 2 the patient commences the inpatient therapeutic programme. This involves a series of lectures, videos, group discussions and individual treatment sessions with both therapists and psychiatrists. Family members are invited to participate in family meetings and are also invited to attend the dual diagnosis lectures. This period may last up to 4 weeks and is individually tailored according to each patient's needs.

Stage 3 is Aftercare. Following an inpatient programme all participants are invited to participate in the aftercare programme. This programme involves attendance at an aftercare group, aftercare lectures and if necessary psychiatric follow up and attention. This generally involves a step down in frequency, phased over one year.
