Consumer Council

Patient and Carer's Consumer Council of St Patrick's and St Edmundsbury Hospitals
The Patient and Carer's Consumer Council of St Patrick's and St Edmundsbury Hospitals is a voluntary committee consisting of service users, former service users  and carers of service users of both hospitals. Members of the Council represent a variety of conditions.

Mission and Aims
It is the objective of the Council to act in an advocacy role in representing the views, experiences and aspirations of users, and their families, of mental health services at the Hospital and in partnership with the Hospital, to actively participate in areas of policy making, planning, organisation, delivery and monitoring of such services.

The overall purpose and aim of the Council is to enhance the experience for patients, and their families, who undertake courses of treatment at the Hospital and to ensure that they have a positive experience in all aspects of their treatment both during and after their stay at the Hospital.

What does the Council do?

  • The aim of the Council is to give a voice to those who are in hospital. Its main focus is that of listening to and representing the views of service users and their carers of the therapeutic treatment, care and support provided by the Hospitals.
  • It holds monthly Consumer Lectures in  order to provide patients / service users with information about its activities and to provide a forum for current service users to express their views in an open setting.  It also works to ensure that this feedback is acted upon.
  • The Council also seeks to develop strategic partnerships with other organisations involved in mental health issues.
  • The Council works to advance the process of open communication   in all aspects of mental health care and to advance this process on behalf of services, patients and carers.  It is in the process of developing consultation and communication structures with the entire body of service users.
